Bangalore International School (BIS), formerly the American Community School, was established in 1969. BIS is accredited by the University of Cambridge International Examinations Syndicate. BIS is an inclusive school in Bangalore that looks beyond strengths and weaknesses and considers every child part of the school community. The Learning Centre (LC) team at BIS comprises of 12 special educators, a speech therapist, an occupational and a developmental therapist. School believes in educating children with special needs in a mainstream school. BIS offers inclusive educational placement along a continuum of partial to full general classroom placement depending on the individual needs of the student. All kids have a place in mainstream class; they participate with their mainstream peers in academics, co-curricular and extracurricular activities to the maximum extent. Special educators offer assistance to students with special needs in the mainstream classroom. Students with specific learning difficulties are offered support in the LC for curriculum-based remediation, for instance, spelling, reading, comprehension and number-crunching. Some students follow an adapted curriculum in the LC which is formulated according to their present level of academic functioning. Students with speech, language or communication difficulties follow an intensive speech therapy programme, whilst those with motor and coordination difficulties are assisted by the occupational/developmental therapist. Friendships between students with special needs and their classmates are encouraged. An Individualised Educational Program (IEP) is formulated for each student receiving The Learning Centre (LC) support; the IEP is flexible enough to meet each child’s academic, socio-emotional and behavioural needs, thereby ensuring the holistic development of the child.
